VALENTINA

Some may think the title of this post is incorrect: Valentina. Most expect to see an "o" at the end of this designer's name as Valentino is the more familiar designer, but Valentina is regarded as one of the most preeminent female designers of the 1930s and 40s. Russian by birth, Valentina immigrated to America and retired her dreams of being an important dancer and actress and concentrated on perfecting her distinguished style which led to opening her eponymous house and dressing everyone from Katherine Hepburn to her most legendary client, Greta Garbo. To really learn about Valentina, read Kohle Yohannan's excellent book about the successful couturier and society figure. Some suggest that she was America's version of Coco Chanel. Like Chanel, Valentina knew her way around a LBD as evidenced by this black silk crepe day dress from 1946 with delicious persimmon convertible sash at the hip.
