THE MOTORCYCLE JACKET

Ever since Marlon Brando and James Dean personified "bad boy cool" on the Silver Screen designers have appropriated the motorcycle jacket on the the runways. From Yves Saint Laurent's legendary crocodile jacket for Dior in 1960 to more or less every editorial in the current September issues of the fashion magazines, the motorcycle jacket is perennial and often ubiquitous. In the 1980s and early 1990s, the motorcycle jacket was revived by a multitude of designers including Stephen Sprouse (remember the great neon leathers around 1988?), Katharine Hamnett ("Clean Up or Die!"), Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel (with a butter yellow taffeta skirt) and of course Gianni Versace. This Versace leather jacket below is intricately studded in an almost delicate metal motif against the toughness of the silhouette, yet suppleness of leather. The back of the jacket tappers at the waist with a ribbed leather technique. If you are feeling the frenzy for motorcycle jacket but want something out of the ordinary then this one is a winner.
