PURPLE RAIN

This James Galanos purple silk crepe dress has a great toga vibe, but in a color that makes your Animal House Toga Party get-up of a white sheet look, well, like a white sheet. When you are feeling Greek, or dating a Frat boy, or just love an evening dress that is so effortless, sexy, and forgiving, turn to this purple gown from the early 1980s. Originally purchased at Neiman Marcus in San Francisco, the gown features a single asymmetric rope strap that attaches to the gown that drapes across the bust and then folds and falls. The engineering of the dress is so simple but is effective because the excess fabric that creates the drape gathers and attaches to itself like a waterfall of fabric. This is one of those gowns that is light to pack, but when it's on, you will have the confidence of an ancient Greek soldier.
